At Home or Out of Place: Imagining the Migrant
Migration Scholar Panel
This panel discussion explores the cultural production of migration narratives. Commencing with the provocative question ‘who is a migrant’, the panelists examine the term ‘migrant’ in its political and epistemological complexity by revisiting key concepts of narrative theory. The panel engages with questions such as who gets the chance to produce narratives about migration and how these narratives interact with popular and official perceptions. What can narratives tell us about the experience of migration? What are the limitations to these narratives? In what ways are these narratives passed onto future generations? How do they come to the forefront of public discussion? A major theme of discussion is 'home', through which the panelists examine the role this fundamental term might play in shaping various discourses on migration.
